Polymers which are halogen substituted hydrocarbons are stabilized by the addition of an olefinically unsaturated terpene, which may be substituted by a hydrocarbon, halogen, hydroxyl, or keto radical and an organic thiol or disulphide. Polymers specified are homo-and copolymers of vinyl or vinylidene chloride or fluoride and chloroprene, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, and chloro-sulphonated ethylene. The terpenes may be mono- or polycyclic of the general formula (C5H8)x when x is from 2 to 6. Bicyclic terpenes wherein one ring has not more than four carbons and the other carries at least one exo-alkylene group are preferred. There is an extensive list of suitable terpenes. The thiols or disulphides have the formula R-S-H or R-S-S-R1 where R and R1 are alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, mercaptoalkyl, carboalkoxyalkyl, haloalkyl, arylalkyl, aryl, alkaryl, haloaryl, mercaptoaryl, mercaptoalkaryl, carboalkoxyaryl, carboxyaryl, cycloalkyl, furyl, furfuryl or thienyl groups. Many suitable compounds are mentioned. Some of the exemplary compositions also contain glycerol triricinoleate. The stabilized polymers may be used to prepare films, filaments, fibres, foils and coatings. Specification 881,534 is referred to.
