Zusammenfassung:	The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: wherein R represents an aliphatic group containing 1-6 carbon atoms and the preparation thereof by reacting 1 molecular proportion of a 3-hydroxy-thiophene -2- carboxylic ester in concentrated sulphuric acid with approximately 1 molecular proportion of concentrated nitric acid, preferably within the range -15 DEG -+10 DEG C. together with fungicidal compositions containing them. Fungicidal compositions comprises one or more compounds of the invention in admixture with an inert diluent. The compositions may be used for the treatment of human, animal and plant fungal diseases and may be applied in all cases where organic material (e.g. cellulose, paper, leather, wood, textiles) require protection against fungi.
