The invention relates to a method for operating a winding machine in a melt spinning process, and to a winding machine for winding a number of threads (9). The threads (9) are wound in alternation by two driven spool spindles (3.1, 3.2) to form rolls (10) which are arranged on a spool revolver (2) and are guided in alternation in an operating region and an alternating region. The initial placement of the threads and the removal of the finished, wound rolls (10) from one of the spool spindles (3.1, 3.2) are performed by an operator. The process is controlled here via a control panel (13) comprising control buttons which are actuated by the operator. In order to avoid control errors and operating errors, the operator performs a prior personal identification beforehand in order to release the control command. To this end, the control panel comprises an identification means (21) for personal recognition of the operator.
