Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to an internal combustion engine (1) having an adjustable variable compression ratio, a crankshaft (2), at least one connecting rod (3), an adjusting mechanism (4) for adjusting an adjustable variable compression ratio, a switch element (5) for switching the adjusting mechanism (4), wherein the switch element (5) is arranged on the connecting rod (3) or the crankshaft (2), and a second shaft (6) which rotates counter to the crankshaft (2), wherein an actuating element (7) is arranged on the second shaft (6) for switching the switch element (5) which has at least one first and one second switch position, wherein in the first switch position the switch element (5) can be switched from a first position into a second position and in the second switch position the switch element (5) can be switched from the second position to the first position, the actuating element (7) makes contact with the switch element (5) when the switch element (5) is switched and the first position corresponds to a first compression ratio and the second position corresponds to a second compression ratio which is different to the first compression ratio.
