The road vehicle air conditioning system has a heat exchanger (18) cooled by input air. A swashplate compressor (14) incorporates a regulating valve and control system. The compressed working fluid passes through a heat exchanger (16) where it can give up heat to the internal combustion engine (21) cooling circuit. The engine cooling circuit includes a fluid-air heat exchanger (22) to heat the cabin adjacent to the evaporator (27) which is used to cool the cabin. The compressed working fluid passes through a three-way valve (24) with a bypass (23) for a throttle valve (17). The fluid then passes through the cooling heat exchanger to a three-way valve, a heat exchanger (20) and back to the pump.
