An independent claim is included for a process for the production of the compounds (I) by reaction of 2-hydroxymethylbornanes of formula (2) or their anhydrides of formula (3) in the presence of an azeotrope agent to remove the byproduct water as an azeotrope and optionally in the presence of a catalyst, separation of excess and unreacted reactants, treatment with an alkaline reagent to remove acidic components, optionally followed by steam distillation and drying and/or fractional distillation.
