Dyeing surface of polymer article comprising a shape memory polymer, comprises (i) pre-treating the surface of the polymer article, (ii) dyeing the surface of the polymer article with a dye solution comprising an organic dye and an organic solvent, and (iii) cleaning the surface of the polymer article, and drying the dye solution. Independent claims are also included for: (1) labeling an article comprising the shape memory polymer having a visual and/or machine readable element on the surface of the graphic article, comprising re-treating the surface of the article, dyeing the surface of the article as above, cleaning and drying the surface of the article, and engraving by at least partial removal of the surface of the article; (2) an article comprising at least partially dyed in one color on one side and at least partially provided with an engraving shape memory polymer, where the engraving with colored portions of the shape memory polymer in a first state of the shape memory polymer has a visual and/or machine readability of the labeling and in a second state of the shape memory polymer has no visual and/or machine readability; (3) the dye solution for dyeing the surface of the article comprising the shape memory polymer in a specified color, comprising at least one organic dye, which is dissolved in a solvent composition, where the solvent composition includes ethanol and lactic acid ethyl ester, or ethanol, lactic acid ethyl ester and acetone; and (4) use of dye for dyeing near-surface layers of a shape memory polymer, preferably segregated poly (ester urethane) for a compound, which is constructed from the hard segment-forming block methylenebis (4-phenylisocyanate) or toluene-2 ,4-diisocyanate and diol, preferably 1,4-butanediol, or a diamine and a soft segment of polyethylene adipate, polypropylene adipate, polybutylene adipate, polypentylene adipate or polyhexylene adipate, where the dye is a triarylmethane dye, a hydroxy triphenyl methane dye, a phthalein, a sulfonphthalein, a amino-triphenylmethane dye, a crystal violet dye, a fuchsin dye, a phenol dye and/or a malachite green dye.
