The freshness-retaining agent (4) comprises an additive such as silver and/or copper, which is introduced into the stagnant water (2) present in a container (1), acts against the formation of germs, bacteria, algae, bio-films, rottenness and/or smells and is present or introduced on a carrier substrate that is a textile flat structure, a foil, metal strips and/or plastic- or metal sieve. The carrier substrate consists of synthetic fibers or metallic materials, whose surfaces are treated with the additive, and is kept in a frame, which consists of a water-insoluble material. The freshness-retaining agent (4) comprises an additive such as silver and/or copper, which is introduced into the stagnant water (2) present in a container (1), acts against the formation of germs, bacteria, algae, bio-films, rottenness and/or smells and is present or introduced on a carrier substrate that is a textile flat structure, a foil, metal strips and/or plastic- or metal sieve. The carrier substrate consists of synthetic fibers or metallic materials, whose surfaces are treated with the additive, and is kept in a frame, which consists of a water-insoluble material. The size of the carrier substrate is selectable in dependent of the volume of the stagnant water. An independent claim is included for a method for retaining freshness of stagnant water.
