The invention relates to a microtome, comprising a knife holding device (20) for a cutting knife (18) and comprising an object holding device (12) for an object to be cut thinly, wherein the object holding device (12) comprises a first drive device (22) for carrying out a cutting motion (14) and the object holding device (12) and/or the knife holding device (20) comprises a second drive device (36) for carrying out a feeding motion (16). The first and/or second drive devices (22, 36) are associated with control electronics (34) and an operating device (64) for the first and/or second drive devices (22, 36). In order to achieve optimal operating comfort, the control device (64) associated with the control electronics (34) for the first and/or second drive devices (22, 36) has a control element (66), which can be actuated in different modes.
