The method involves automatically detecting whether a key authorized for a motor vehicle (1) is present. An operating cycle is continued automatically by using a controller (7) of the motor vehicle, if a key authorized for the motor vehicle is detected during a request and if the key authorized for the motor vehicle is not detected during another request. The motor vehicle between manual starting and manual stopping of an internal combustion engine (6) of the motor vehicle is present in the operating cycle. The engine of the motor vehicle is operated in a starting/stopping operation. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a motor vehicle.
