Steam and product gas generation involves conveying catalyst bed (20) through a reactor tube (10). A feeding gas is allowed to flow into the catalyst bed against direction of travel of the catalyst bed. A temperature profile is regulated along the reactor tube by thermally insulating, heating and/or cooling regulation sections in the reactor tube. Waste heat generated in one of the regulation sections through cooling action is transferred from the reactor tube to a steam generation unit. An independent claim is included for a modular product gas-steam reactor, which comprises a steam generation unit and reaction unit comprising a reaction tube and a heat transfer device.
