The energy saving unit has a monitoring unit (14) that monitors operating parameters of a utility unit (12) during the operating sequence. The monitoring unit automatically adjusts a standby-operating mode in the operating sequence. A control unit (20) operates the device in different quality operating modes and/or energy consumption operating mode. A sensor (52) is electrically connected to the monitoring unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a household appliance.
