Exhaust gas purification unit for an internal combustion engine (3) comprises: (a) a catalyst-filter system (4) comprising a catalyst (5) for converting nitric oxide (NO) to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and a filter (6) in which particulates are filtered from the exhaust gas and burned while converting NO2 to NO; (b) a heater (8) for heating the gas entering the catalyst-filter system; and (c) a control unit (16) that activates the heater when the gas temperature in the catalyst-filter system is less than that required to convert NO to NO2. An Independent claim is also included for a method for regenerating the catalyst-filter system in such an exhaust gas purification unit, comprising measuring the exhaust gas temperature upstream of the catalyst-filter system and activating the heater when the measured temperature is less than that required to convert NO to NO2.
