The hydrogen feeds into the exhaust gases (4) upstream of the catalytic converter (3). The reforming reactor has an oxygen and/or water supply (6). The exhaust pipe (4) especially has a branch (5) to the reforming reactor, supplying oxygen and water. An automotive catalytic exhaust assembly comprises a reforming reactor (1) that extracts hydrogen from fuel. The hydrogen feeds into the exhaust gases (4) upstream of the catalytic converter (3). The reforming reactor has an oxygen and/or water supply (6). The exhaust pipe (4) especially has a branch (5) to the reforming reactor, supplying oxygen and water. The reforming reactor (1) adjusts the ratio of oxygen to fuel in the reactor by a mass-flow oxygen sensor (12) linked to a valve or regulator in the branch pipe (5). The reforming reactor has an electrical heater element (10). The reactor (1) is thermally linked to the exhaust pipe (4) and has catalytic substrate structure minimizing pressure losses. The pressure within the branch pipe (5) is no more than that in the exhaust pipe (4).
