The present invention relates to a process for the production of titanium oxide comprising digesting an ilmenite ore, containing titanium oxide and iron oxides, with sulfuric acid at concentration of 80 to 94 percent to form a solution of titanium sulfate and iron sulfates, and subsequently precipitating hydrous titanium oxide from the titanium sulfate solution, characterized in that said ilmenite ore has a composition such that at least 92 per cent by weight of the iron present in the ore is in the ferrous state and, if necessary, a reducing agent is added to the titanium sulfate and iron sulfate solution in an amount equivalent to less than 4.0 percent by weight metallic iron calculated with respect to said ilmenite ore. |
