The invention relates to an underground hydrant (1). Said hydrant comprises an outer jacket (2) and a valve housing (3), which adjoins said jacket and extends down therefrom. The housing can be connected to a water conduit by a connection opening (5) by means of a lower connecting flange (4) with the interposition of an annular seal (25). The hydrant also comprises a main valve (7, 10, 11) mounted in the valve housing (3), whose valve body (7) can be actuated by means of a spindle (6) that is guided through the outer jacket (2), in addition to a return valve (8, 12) located below the main valve (7, 10, 11), the valve body (8) of which is guided through the valve housing (3) and is prevented from falling out by an annular retaining device (15), consisting of a bush (16) and a collar (18), that is inserted into the connection opening (5), fixed to the wall thereof (17) and reduces the free diameter (D5) of said opening. To produce the retaining device simply and cost-effectively and in such a way that it can co-operate with a standard annular seal, the collar (18) fixes a separate annular seal (25) to the connecting flange (4).
