According to the system, different magnetic fluid density gradients are shown through the arrangement of magnetic fluid in a sorting area in an upper electromagnetic field or a lower electromagnetic field, and waste plastic to be sorted floats, suspends or precipitates in a magnetic fluid medium due to the density difference of the waste plastic to be sorted, so that sorting and collecting of the waste plastic are completed. The system can simultaneously sort various plastics and other impurities in one sorting process, and the sorting medium is easy to recycle; the sorting system does not need to occupy a large amount of places, and the water demand and the wastewater yield are extremely small.
