Production of 1-(2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexyl)-3-alkanols containing trans isomers of formula D comprises hydrogenating corresponding enones of formula B in the presence of a nickel catalyst in the absence of copper chromite. R = H or 1-4C alkyl; R1 = 1-4C alkyl. An Independent claim is also included for production of a perfume composition by preparing one or more 1-(2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexyl)-3-alkanols as above, optionally isolating and/or purifying the products and mixing them with conventional perfume ingredients.
