Zusammenfassung:	Sulphonated distyryl-biphenyl compounds of the formula: in which R1 and R2, independently, are hydrogen, 1-5 C- alkyl, 1-5 C- alkoxy or halogen, M represents hydrogen, an alkaline- or alkaline earth-metal, or ammonium, and the two sulphonic acid groups are in the 2,3'-, 2,4'- or 3,4'-positions of the respective benzene rings, with the proviso that when the sulphonic acid groups are in the 2- and 3'-positions, R1 is not hydrogen and R2 not a 4'- chloro- substituent and mixtures of these compounds together with symmetrically sulphonated distyryl-biphenyls as optical brightening agents for textiles, detergents and paper.
