The invention relates to a nitration mixture for the nitration of 2, 4-dinitrotoluene and 2, 6-dinitrotoluene to 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene, containing from 5 wt.% to 20 wt.% of nitrogen oxides (V), from 60 wt.% to 80 wt.% of nitric acid (V) and from 5 wt.% to 30 wt.% of sulfuric acid (VI).
