Various embodiments of the present invention relate to an apparatus and method for wireless LAN communication in an electronic device. The electronic device includes a wireless LAN communication circuit and a processor that may: perform wireless LAN communication with a first AP via a first channel in a first frequency band; confirming a function of the external device and/or wireless LAN connection information if an external device with which wireless LAN-based direct communication is to be performed is detected during wireless LAN communication with the first AP; switching wireless LAN communication with the first AP to wireless LAN communication with the second AP based on a second channel in the second frequency band based on the function of the external device and/or the wireless LAN connection information; and performing direct communication with the external device via a second channel in the second frequency band.
