Zusammenfassung: | A heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head has a slider having a gas bearing surface (GBS). The slider supports a near field transducer (NFT) and a main pole having a step or recess in a surface facing the NFT near the GBS, the step or recess comprising a plasmon material. A thermal diverter is positioned between the NFT and the main pole to allow heat to be transferred away from a spot of light generated by the NFT. The NFT-facing surface of the main pole recessed from a step away from the GBS is in contact with the thermal diverter, and the thermal diverter is in contact with the plasmon material in a step in a rear region recessed from the GBS, so that the spacing between the NFT and a majority of the main pole is not increased.
