Zusammenfassung: | The invention relates to an optical mode coupler in an integrated photonics device. An optical device includes a photonic integrated circuit having an optical mode coupler. An optical mode coupler optically couples a first planar optical waveguide having a first optical core on one horizontal plane to a second planar optical waveguide having a second optical core on a second, different horizontal plane. The optical mode coupler includes two or more intermediate optical layers vertically stacked between horizontal planes of the optical core, the intermediate optical layers including one or more optical tracks. The optical mode coupler causes light received from the first planar optical waveguide to excite an optical mode and guide light of the optical mode such that the optical mode overlaps an optical track of the first planar optical waveguide and the at least two intermediate optical layers in a vertical cross-section of the photonic integrated circuit.
