Storage system and method for early command cancellation

A storage system receives an instruction to cancel a read/write command in processing. Although the command is cancelled, the storage system allows data associated with the command to continue to be processed by a data path in the storage system. However, before the data is actually delivered away from the data path, a controller determines that the command is cancelled and prevents the data from being delivered away while internally indicating that the delivery is complete.
