The invention provides a nitrogen-containing polycyclic compound, a material, an element, a display device and a lighting device. Provided is a novel compound which is useful as a material for an organic device such as an organic EL element. A nitrogen-containing heteropolycyclic compound represented by formula (1) is useful as an electron transport material for an organic EL element; at least one of the rings A to C is a substituted or unsubstituted nitrogen-containing heteroaryl ring, the others are substituted or unsubstituted aryl rings or substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl rings, and any one of the rings has a bonding bond to ArD, m is 1 or 2, when m is 1, ArD is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group, when m is 1, ArD is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group, and when m is 1, ArD is a substituted or unsubstituted nitrogen-containing heteroaryl group. When m is 2, ArD is a substituted or unsu
