Zusammenfassung: | A new class of silicone monomers has been developed that provide a transparent material and impart hydrophilic properties. These materials are introduced into ophthalmic devices, such as flexible gas permeable and rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. These new silicone monomers include a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) having two polymerizable groups and six organic functional groups. These types of structures incorporate at least two available polymerization sites, allowing the introduction of a silsesquioxane cage into the backbone of the macromolecule. Other functional group sites allow for the design of specific chemical properties to meet the desired material performance.
