Magnetic recording medium with multiple cushion layers and magnetic recording device used therewith

Various devices, systems, methods, and media for heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) are disclosed, in some examples, these devices, systems, methods, and media provide a HAMR media with two cushion layers (SULs) located on opposite sides of a single heat sink layer. For example, a magnetic recording medium including a lower SUL on a substrate is provided. The lower SUL is configured and positioned within the medium to provide a first return path for magnetic flux from the magnetic recording head during write operations. The media also includes a heat sink layer on the lower SUL and a higher SUL on the heat sink layer. The higher SUL is configured and positioned within the medium to provide a second return path for magnetic flux from the magnetic recording head. A magnetic recording layer is disposed on the higher SUL to store information during the write operation.
