Load detection and cycle modification in laundry appliance applications

An inference of a laundry cycle type of laundry load is provided. Measurements are performed on a laundry load in a drum of the laundry apparatus during the pre-rinse cycle, the measurements including one or more of an absorption rate of the laundry load, a retention rate of the laundry load, a dry mass of the laundry load, a wet mass of the laundry load, and a dehydration mass of the laundry load. Load parameters are determined based on the measurements using a model.
