The invention discloses a water-based acrylic resin with excellent impact property and a preparation method thereof. The water-based acrylic resin is prepared from mercaptopropionic acid, hydroxyethyl acrylate, a hard monomer, a soft monomer, ethylene glycol butyl ether, an initiator and other raw materials. According to the invention, the water-soluble acrylic resin with high impact property (greater than 50kg) and high hardness is obtained by optimizing a synthesis path.
