The present invention provides a method and apparatus for encoding/decoding a data content representing a volumetric video wherein the encoding/decoding comprises encoding/decoding an indicator in a bitstream specifying whether the data content has information representing at least one set of depth layers, the information representing a set of depth layers specifies a number of depth layers for a layer-based representation of the volumetric video and a depth value for each of the depth layers.
