Creating two simultaneous VPN connections for VPN clients

The techniques described herein support the establishment of a connection of two simultaneous virtual private networks (VPNs) for a VPN client operating on a remote computing device. A VPN client may establish a first VPN connection with a first VPN server instance of a VPN gateway, and establish a second VPN connection with a second VPN server instance of the VPN gateway. To establish two simultaneous VPN connections, a VPN client is configured to create and/or use two Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) sockets. In one example, the first VPN connection may be a primary VPN connection, and the second VPN connection may be a dormant VPN connection configured to serve as a backup in the event of a service interruption with the first VPN connection.
