An electromechanical actuator (1800) includes an electroactive layer (1810) disposed between a primary electrode (1822) and a secondary electrode (1824), the electroactive layer having a first curvature (A) when a zero voltage is applied between the electrodes, and a second curvature (B) when a non-zero voltage is applied between the electrodes. Preferably, the first curvature and the second curvature are of the same size but of opposite signs.
