The method comprises the following steps: determining an estimated fault interval section; correcting an original frequency spectrum of a fault traveling wave head at each end of the line based on the estimated fault interval section to obtain a corrected frequency spectrum in which the frequency spectrum change of a power transmission line structure and the frequency spectrum change of a line terminal station are corrected; determining a fault traveling wave head frequency according to the correction frequency spectrum; according to the frequency dependent characteristic of each line interval section and the fault traveling wave head frequency, determining the traveling wave speed of each line interval section; and determining an actual fault position according to the traveling wave velocity of each line section.
