Generating and presenting messaging thread-specific and content-based effects

The present disclosure relates to systems, non-transitory computer-readable media, and methods for generating an association between a graphical element and text of a messaging thread, and providing an overlay including the graphical element based on providing the message including the text to the messaging thread. Specifically, in one or more embodiments, the disclosed system receives a user's selection of text and a graphical element and provides an association between the text and the graphical element to client devices associated with a messaging thread.
