Described herein is a process for the continuous production of alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate, the process comprising the step of mixing particulate gypsum, a modifier, and water to form a gypsum slurry. The method further includes calcining the gypsum slurry to provide an alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate slurry, and filtering the alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate slurry to separate at least one fluid stream from the slurry, measuring a first control parameter of the at least one fluid stream or the alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate slurry; and combining the at least one fluid stream with additional gypsum, additional water, and additional modifier to form an additional gypsum slurry, wherein the method further includes varying the amount of additional modifier according to the measurement of the first control parameter.
