Virtualizing hardware processing resources in a processor is disclosed. Processing hardware of a processor is virtualized to provide an appearance between a consistent programming interface and a particular hardware instance. Hardware processor components may be permanently or temporarily disabled when there is no need to support consistent programming interfaces and/or there is no need to balance hardware processing across hardware arrangements, such as integrated circuits.
