A wheel system for a vehicle is provided that includes a stator, a rotor, a swivel bearing, and an in-wheel motor. The in-wheel motor comprises a motor stator and a motor rotor. The rotor is coupled to the stator via a swivel bearing to rotate about an axis of rotation. A motor stator is connected to the stator. A motor rotor is connected to the rotor to cooperate with the motor stator to generate an electromagnetic force to rotate the rotor relative to the stator about an axis of rotation. The motor stator has a center defining a center plane extending through the center and perpendicular to the axis of rotation. The central plane has an inner side and an outer side. In operational use, the inner side faces the center of the vehicle and the outer side faces away from the center of the vehicle. The rotor has a mounting surface configured for attachment to a wheel rim. The mounting surface is disposed on the inner side.
