Storage and retrieval system

The invention discloses a storage array in an automated storage and retrieval system. The storage array comprises storage spaces arranged on a shelf along a pick-up channel; a plurality of decks, where at least one deck communicates with each channel, where the decks and channels are configured to define a rolling surface for an autonomous transport vehicle at each layer of the decks, the shelves along at least one lane at each layer are at the plurality of shelf layers accessed from a respective rolling surface common to the plurality of shelf layers, and the vertical spacing between the shelf layers varies for a portion of the respective lane; the vertical distance between at least two goods shelf layers of the part of the corresponding channel is related to another vertical distance between at least two other goods shelf layers of another channel part of the corresponding channel, so that the vehicles can be picked up multiple times according to an ordered sequence when passing through the common channel.
