The controller comprises a timer (22) for timing a total duration of a brushing session of the electric toothbrush and adapted to calculate, in a feedback mode of operation, an average total duration of a brushing session based on the stored number of previous brushing sessions; a target value is defined based on the calculated average total duration, and when its duration reaches the target value, a sensory output is caused to be generated during the brushing session to encourage the user to continue brushing.
