A server system includes a storage device, a processing device, and a storage fabric each operating according to a storage fabric protocol. The storage fabric includes a plurality of individual switches having a modular design, from which the overall switch is constructed, and which individual switches have individual respective configuration settings that determine which processing devices are allocated for use of which storage devices. The system includes an API that enables software control functionality to configure the overall switch.
