Hydrophobically modified associative thickener polymer and preparation method and application thereof

Disclosed is a hydrophobically modified associative thickener polymer prepared from a reaction mixture comprising a) polytetrahydrofuran having the structure of formula (I): b) at least one active hydrogen-containing compound; c) a gem-halide compound and an alkaline hydroxide; or d) a polyglycidyl ether and a basic hydroxide; e) optionally a hydrophobic compound, wherein m is an integer from 2 to 750. An aqueous protective coating composition is also disclosed.
