The method comprises the following steps: by taking 2, 6-dimethyl biphenol as a raw material, sequentially carrying out oxidation reaction and reduction reaction under an alkaline emulsification condition and the action of a catalyst to obtain a 3, 3 ', 5, 5'-tetraalkyl biphenol crude product, and carrying out multi-step purification and separation to obtain a 3, 3 ', 5, 5'-tetraalkyl biphenol pure product. The purity of the prepared 3, 3 ', 5, 5'-tetramethyl biphenol reaches up to 99% or above, the metal ion content is low, meanwhile, organic solid waste generated in the purification process is recycled, and the conversion rate of the 3, 3 ', 5, 5'-tetramethyl biphenol is increased.
