The invention provides a preparation method of a phosphorus-containing flame retardant and application of the phosphorus-containing flame retardant in a polymer composition. The phosphorus-containing flame retardant is produced by reacting a mixture comprising a metal or suitable metal compound and an unsubstituted or alkyl or aryl substituted phosphonic acid or pyrophosphonic acid in a stoichiometric excess relative to the metal or suitable metal compound at a reaction temperature at which the phosphonic acid or pyrophosphonic acid is in the molten state. The chemical composition of the resulting flame retardant product results in excellent flame retardancy and exhibits high thermal stability.
