The present invention relates to a food bar device (100) having: a product holding element (103A, 103B) for holding a fresh food product; comprising at least one cover element (10A, 10B) switchable between a closed and an open position; a cover element sensing means (30A, 30B) that records the activation or movement of the cover element (10A, 10B) towards the open position or vice versa; a disinfection device comprising a plurality of UV-C sources (52) which, in an activated state, expose the food product to UV-C light at a wavelength suitable for inactivating the pathogen; and a disinfection control system in communication with the cover element sensing means (30A, 30B) and the UV-C source activation/deactivation means (40), which controls the disinfection means such that at least some of the UV-C sources are deactivated when the cover element is opened or moved to the open position.
