A system includes a gas turbine system (10) including a compressor (16), a combustor (18), a turbine (22), and an exhaust section (24). The system also includes a plurality of sensors (40) coupled to components of the gas turbine system (10). The system also includes a controller (38) communicatively coupled to the gas turbine system (10) and the plurality of sensors (40), and configured to control operation of the gas turbine system (10), where the controller (38) is configured to calculate an alternative value of a turbine outlet Mach number based on feedback from the plurality of sensors (40), and deriving a control action of the gas turbine system (10) using the alternative value.
