An apparatus for use in conjunction with a charging well of a furnace containing a molten metal pool into which metal chips are introduced for melting. The apparatus includes a side well having a pump well and a charge well. And a metal melting pump is accommodated in the pump well. And a waste immersing device is accommodated in the charging well. The pump well and the charge well are in fluid communication through a passage in the bridge wall separating the pump well and the charge well. The bridge wall defines a semi-circular end wall of the charging well.
