The method comprises determining (102, 104) whether a magnitude of a DC voltage (Udp) of the MMC has dropped below an upper voltage threshold (Udmaxlim), and if it is determined that the magnitude of the DC voltage has dropped below the upper voltage threshold, lowering (106) a magnitude of an AC active current reference (IVDOD) and a magnitude of a DC voltage reference (UDCREF) for the MMC based on the DC pole voltage.
