Zusammenfassung: | A method of manufacturing an energy absorbing member for a vehicle is provided. The method includes heating a bainite GENS steel material to a temperature above an Ac3 temperature to convert a portion of ferrite and bainite to austenite, the bainite GENS steel material having a microstructure including ferrite and bainite. The method also includes forming the heated steel billet into a component in a temperature controlled steel mold while cooling. During the cooling step, the steel is cooled to a temperature below the Ms temperature to form retained austenite. During the forming step and the cooling step, a portion of the austenite is converted into martensite and bainite. The method may also include heating the component to a temperature above the Ms temperature after the forming step and the cooling step to increase energy absorption characteristics. During a collision event, a strain exerted on the component converts retained austenite present in the component to martensite.
