Zusammenfassung: | Apparatus and methods for vibration-free cryogenic cooling are disclosed that are suitable for TEM and other analytical equipment. A thermal battery includes one or more of the following: a cryocooler, a thermal switch, a thermal cold reservoir, and a cold finger. And the heat storage and collection device is arranged outside the sample chamber. The cold finger provides a thermal coupling between the reservoir and a sample holder inside the sample chamber. In various embodiments, the sample holder and sample temperature are adjusted by a heater or by an inline variable thermal resistor. Circulating staged operations include cooling the reservoir, disconnecting the cryocooler from the reservoir, and passive vibration-free thermal energy extraction temperature-regulated from the sample to the reservoir. The described system provides a dead time of 12 hours at 20 K. Temperature regulation, hybrid thermal switching, thermal ripple damping, and material selection are described.
