Zusammenfassung:	The invention provides an apparatus and a method for controlling a rectifier of a welding transformer. The rectifier has two rectifier branches in which at least one transistor module is connected between the secondary winding of the welding transformer and the welding electrode of the welding tool. The device is designed to determine at least one predetermined electrical boundary condition during operation of at least one transistor module of the rectifier, which is alternately switched to a first operating mode or to a second operating mode during operation, when no power is fed on the primary side of the welding transformer. The transistor modules of the two rectifier branches are switched on in a first operating mode, and only one of the two rectifier branches is switched on alternately in a second operating mode when power is fed on the primary side for welding for a predetermined period of time, the device is designed to determine a switching-off time point of the at least one transistor module on the b
